As we head towards Shrove Tuesday – or Pancake Day – as it’s affectionately known, Central Foods has revealed the staggering number of American pancakes it sold last year.

“American pancakes are a really popular product in the UK now. Over the past five years, sales of the American pancakes supplied by Central Foods have leapt by almost 75%,” explained MD Gordon Lauder.

“We’ve worked out that if we laid all the American pancakes we sold in 2017 end to end they would match the equivalent of 15,000 times the height of the Statue of  Liberty or 3,500 times the height of the Empire State Building. That’s a lot of pancakes!”

Although pancakes are relatively quick and easy to make from scratch, when having to make in volume for a particular meal occasion, it can be much easier to defrost and serve ready-made pancakes, said Gordon.

“These will be consistent in size and thickness for perfect portion control, leave no mess - broken egg shells in volumes will be really messy both for the operator making the pancakes and in their workspace - and having back-up frozen supplies means it’s easy to cope with unexpected demand,” he added.

One of the beauties of pancakes is versatility. Not only do they appeal to adults and children alike, they can also be used for meal and snack occasions throughout the day, and as either sweet or savoury menu items.
