In 1830, in Derry, Northern Ireland, James Doherty opened his first butcher's shop.  The business was continued by his son and grandson and by 1945 comprised a small retail chain owned by Thomas J Doherty.  That same year, the current chairman, James Doherty, joined his father and began a process of expansion and development into processed beef and pork products.

In 2010 the hand-over to a sixth generation began and today the BRC accredited company is still a family business, managed by James Doherty's sons.

The company is a key supplier of gluten-free sausages throughout Northern Ireland and County Donegal to both retailers and caterers.  So tasty are the products, they are now also available in the larger retailers in the UK and available to caterers for the first time from Central Foods: 

  • free-from wheat and gluten
  • made with Irish pork
