Menuserve quiches made from British eggs, confirms Central Foods
Frozen food distributor Central Foods has highlighted its commitment to using only British eggs in its popular range of Menuserve quiches after warnings to the foodservice sector about using imported eggs.
The British Egg Industry Council (BEIC) has issued an urgent warning to UK food businesses following concerns over the rising number of imported eggs being seen in foodservice.
The BEIC is worried that an influx of eggs produced to lower food safety standards than the British Lion standards could lead to more food safety issues similar to those seen across Europe.
The organisation is calling on all food businesses to check the eggs that they are sourcing to ensure they meet British Lion standards.
Oli Sampson, MD of Central Foods, said: “ We are happy to confirm that all the eggs used in our Menuserve quiches are British eggs. This is what has helped them to achieve such a great reputation as the perfect quiche for the food service sector.
“Our Menuserve quiches are available in a range of flavours, either whole or pre-sliced, and are a great way for food service operators and caterers to serve the nation’s number one party food product.
“Customer reassurance is very important to us and we hope that this confirmation that the Menuserve quiches contain only British eggs will help food service operators to know where to come when they want to source quality quiches to serve on their menus.”
Menuserve is Central Foods’ own brand, which features a range of quality sweet and savoury, fully finished products for chefs to add to their menus.
The range of quiches includes pre-cut Quiche Lorraine, cheese and onion, cheese and broccoli, and Mediterranean style, along with 11 inch whole quiches in the following flavours: Quiche Lorraine, cheese and onion, tomato and basil, Spanish style, cheese and broccoli, and Mediterranean style.
Nick Allen, chief executive of the BEIC, said: “We’re seeing a worrying rise in imported eggs entering the UK, many from countries where food safety issues have arisen. These eggs don’t get close to matching the safety standards of British Lion eggs.
“Last year, eggs from Poland were directly linked to Salmonella cases here in the UK, and there are ongoing serious issues in Europe involving eggs from Ukraine and elsewhere.
“We are urging food businesses to check their egg sourcing very carefully. Their reputation, and more importantly, their customers’ health, could depend on it.”
